Ashley Furniture Extended Protection Plans
Service contracts are generally a bad deal. Contrary to what most experts recommend, consumers continue to buy these types of products. This tendency is increased where the items are “hedonic,” i.e., associated with enjoyment. And what’s more enjoyable than relaxing with your family on your big, new sofa? Chances are it won’t be cheap. Since the family will be spending a lot of time using the furniture, there’s always a chance it could break, rip, stain, etc.
Some of the big furniture retailers, like Ashley Furniture, heavily promote their “service contracts” to purchasers. However, a quick look online would make it clear that this would likely be a bad financial decision.
Here’s one Facebook post, where the company claims the person’s couch is “normal wear.”
It’s unfortunate that this person, and many others, are misled into the benefits of buying an extended protection plan from companies like Ashley Furniture.
Google’s AI Overview tells us:
Many complaints regarding Ashley Furniture’s extended warranty center around claims of them denying legitimate repair requests, citing “normal wear and tear” even on relatively new furniture, difficult customer service experiences, and accusations of deceptive marketing practices regarding coverage details, leading many to advise against purchasing their extended warranty plans.
While an “extended protection plan,” or a “service contract,” is required to stick to specific promises and limitations, Ashley has promoted its “Furniture Protection” as a “Premium Protection Plan,” telling potential customers that, “Life happens and so do accidents.”
The takeaway is that buying this “protection plan” is a smart choice. What they don’t tell you is that promising to insure against “accidents” is the sine qua non, or “essential condition,” of insurance. That’s one of the main issues with service contracts, that they are marketed as insurance, but without the regulations of the insurance industry. The result is consumer dissatisfaction as premiums or payments are made, and most of the time, legitimate claims are denied.
If you bought a furniture protection plan, extended protection plan, or whatever deceptive name is currently used, at an Ashley Furniture store in New York, and when you went to use it, realized you made the wrong decision, let us know. It’s possible that you may have a legal claim.
